Conflict-prone schools receive gifts of 'happiness' for peace

PANTUKAN, CVP -
The slippery and rough terrain of Patukan's mountain range has not stopped the volunteers of Youth for Peace Movement (YFPM) Pantukan to advocate peace in Comval, as they opened YFPM Comval's flagship outreach program entitled "A Peace of Happiness," last June 1, 2018.

Packed with determination, the volunteers traveled to Sitio Boringot and Diat Palo, two notable conflict-affected communities (CAC) here, to provide the basic supplies needed by the students, 3 days before the opening of classes.

With the help of various agencies such as the Provincial Local Government Unit (LGU) of Comval, led by Governor Jayvee Tyron L. Uy , LGU Pantukan, TADECO, Inc., 46th Infantry Battalion, and Pantukan's Sangguniang Kabataan Municipal Federation, the YFPM Pantukan was able to deliver 230 school materials such as notebooks, pad papers, erasers, pencils, ball pens, and a lot more to 230 high school and elementary students in the two sitios. A total of 150 slippers were also distributed to selected students.

Various individuals were also able to donate cash assistance and other supplies, which paved way for the organization to realize the program.

The campaign, which will last until July 2018, is an annual summer program of the organization that aims to bring happiness among the youth and students in CACs all-over Compostela Valley, by delivering the basic school materials and their other needs to pursue education.

According to the President of YFPM Pantukan, Mr. Joseph Zita Rizon, the said activity is part of their Community Development Program which targets to assist the LGU on bringing back the peace in every community all over the Province.

"It has been a desire of our organization to assist the government and other concerned agencies in addressing the different root causes of insurgency, which generally affects the youth sector. And 'A Peace of Happiness' is one of our main contributions for that," he added.

YFPM Pantukan was overwhelmingly welcomed by the students, the parents, and school faculties of the two different schools who also commended the organization and the donors for their effort.

The said Opening of the campaign was also graced the President of YFPM Comval, Mr. Bren Cabatingan who shared the importance of having the tools for education.

"We consider conflict as the ultimate hindrance why our students cannot pursue education, especially in this part of our Province. But as we keep on engaging communities who have the same situation like yours, we have understood that having no tools or the inability to avail it also adds to their misery to be educated. That is the reason why we are here," he added.

Meanwhile, YFPM Comval is set to deliver more supplies to every student in communities that are far from town centers through the 'A Peace of Happiness,' even when classes are already going on, to serve those who are still in need of school materials.
